A tale of two migrant mothers

We took a family field trip to the Dorothea Lange exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California today. It was a gorgeous day, and we had a tasty, relaxing lunch at the museum cafe. Dorothea’s most famous photo, Migrant Mother, is one of my favorite social documentary photos.

In the midst of all the troubles we’re experiencing in the US at the moment, the exhibit helped us remember how fortunate we are. This new migrant mother has never had to experience the squalor that the original one endured.

Newborn photos

Kaori and I took Louie to a professional photographer for some newborn photos today. We got the proofs back within a few hours and the photos she took were crap. She missed the focus point on many of them and there was something wrong with the composition or expression on others. I was planning to take some photos myself, but realize I now need to step it up and take the photos of record.

This evening, I created a little set up on the back deck and took some test shots. Some of them are not half bad.
