Mexico 2011

By Mark Beresford

As I was looking through my photo catalog for volcanoes to help my niece with a project, I got stuck looking at photos from our 2011 trip to Mexico. We had so much fun that I had to make a photo story.

WARNING: Don’t continue if you can’t handle a little public display of affection.

We arrived at our beach hotel in Mexico and headed to the outdoor bar for cocktails.

“How long have you guys been married?” said the man next to us.

“Uhhhhh. Actually, we… ummmm… only met three weeks ago.”

One of the top five crack-ups of all time.

This photo story is seven years late, and my only camera was a Nikon pocket point-and-shoot I bought for the trip. But it still counts.

Our room at the Sheraton Hacienda, between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, was right on the beach.

We had coffee and cookies on the sand each morning as the sun came up.

The surf was too dangerous to swim in, so we relaxed around the pool once the air had warmed up.

The iguanas hung around the pool too.

Then it was time to eat. We had amazing breakfasts every day with everything we could possibly want.

We rented a car and drove up the coast to Todos Santos, a small town with an artsy vibe. The road to get there, though, was remote and sketchy and we seemed to be the only tourists on it. We were a little nervous, but everything worked out and we had a great day walking around the town, eating lunch on a rooftop of Hotel Casa Tota.

The next day we drove into Cabo. It wasn’t our scene — too touristy — but we did find a great little ghetto taqueria and Kaori ate about 20 tacos. She still talks about how good it was.

She said I looked much too posh to be in this restaurant.

Back at the resort, on our last night we had an amazing evening meal. The restaurant overlooked the ocean and we sat next to an outdoor fire. That’s when one of us mumbled something about love. I forget who it was.

Everyone thought were were crazy to go on a trip together after only three weeks.

Everyone except us.

Everyone except us.

Eri and Takeshi's wedding

By Mark Beresford

I was given the honour of photographing Eri and Takeshi’s wedding last Monday.

Eri and Takeshi really did a super job of planning an informal but elegant wedding at the Alameda Island Court House. The ceremony was very quick and the lighting in the room wasn’t good at all, but afterwards we found some spots around the courthouse where there was good light.

We had a tasty lunch at Jack London Square in Oakland and I took some more pics by the harbour. It was a lovely day all around.

My first video on pixelznwords

By Mark Beresford

I’m starting to make videos. Years ago I made some home videos with a Hi-8 camcorder. It was fun but laborious, and as a result I’ve always said that I don’t do video. However, being a big YouTube user now, I see the value in video more and realize how that in my business it will soon be essential to know how to make videos.

I made my first video for a client last week. Tonight, I was home alone with the baby all evening and I decided to see if I could make a quick video. I attached my external microphone and external audio recorder to my camera, set up some lights, and just started filming. Here’s the result with only crude editing.

Louie was really tired and a bit grumpy for the video and fell asleep not long after.
